Dusty violet blonde. G put this one up with a single line — a smoky, cool-toned blonde with a very soft violet undertone — and that line is the whole brief. Nothing loud, nothing warm. Just blonde taken down a notch, cooled right off, and left with the faintest lilac running through it.
In the chair it reads as a blonde that sits somewhere between ash and pearl. In some lights it looks almost grey, in others almost silver-pink. It is also far more forgiving to live with than a clean platinum, which is exactly why so many of our Gympie clients end up here after a few rounds of bright blonde.

What a dusty violet blonde actually is
Dusty is the key word. A dusty blonde has had the warmth and the brightness pulled back so it looks softer and slightly muted — like a blonde that has been sitting in a drawer rather than one that just came out of the packet. Violet is what does that work. Violet sits opposite yellow on the colour wheel, so a violet toner neutralises gold rather than covering it with more gold.
The trick is restraint. Too much violet and you get lilac hair, or a muddy grey cast that looks flat and tired after a week. The right amount leaves a cool blonde with just a hint of violet in the shadow, which is what gives this look its softness. It is a blonde with a mood rather than a blonde with a colour.
It also suits our light here. Under Gympie’s bright afternoon sun, a warm blonde can go brassy in about ten minutes. A cool, dusty base holds its shape in strong light, which is why our blonde clients tend to ask for it going into summer.
How a cool blonde like this gets built
A lift like this usually starts with the blonde itself. Depending on what is already on your hair, that means foils or a full lightening pass, worked in fine sections so the result is even from root to tip. Blonde is where the patience goes — you cannot rush the lift and you cannot skip the sectioning, or you end up with bands that no toner will hide.
Then comes the tone, and this is the part that decides whether you get dusty violet or plain ash. A violet-based toner is applied over the freshly lifted blonde, watched closely, and rinsed at the point where the gold is gone but the violet has not taken over. That window is short. It is the single biggest reason to have the same stylist tone your blonde each time — they know how your hair grabs colour and how far to push it.
The better toners are also gentle. Wella’s blonde range lets us shift tone without another round of stress on the hair, which matters when the blonde underneath has already been through a lift. All of our colour work is done on Wella Professionals and Goldwell, and you can see the full salon menu here.

Keeping a violet blonde looking right between visits
Violet is the first thing to leave. It fades faster than the blonde underneath, so around the three to five week mark most cool blondes drift slightly warmer and lose that smoky edge. Nothing has gone wrong — the toner has simply done its dash.
A toner refresh at the basin brings it straight back, and it is a much smaller appointment than the original colour. Book one before a wedding, a birthday or a photo, not after.
At home, wash less often and with something cool-toned. A violet or silver shampoo used once a week is plenty; used every wash it can push the hair grey and dry it out. Keep the heat down too. Hot tools and hot water both open the cuticle and let that cool tone escape faster, so a heat protectant and a lukewarm rinse are cheap insurance.
And keep your trims honest. A dusty blonde shows dry ends more than a warm one does, because there is no gold to hide behind. A small trim every eight to ten weeks keeps the ends looking clean and the colour looking deliberate.
