Another one for the toy box

19 August 2026 · Nails
Western themed nail art at La Mode Gympie

Another one for the toy box. Ten nails, a whole cast of characters, and every one of them painted by hand in the chair.

There is a cowboy in a cow-print vest, his cowgirl with the plait, a certain space ranger in green and purple, one very green three-eyed alien and a little horse — plus cow print, a zebra stripe and a red-and-yellow shirt to fill the gaps. Nobody printed a decal for this. It is freehand paint on a short squoval set over a milky nude base.

Why a set like this takes the time it does

Each nail is its own tiny painting, done with a brush a couple of millimetres wide on a curved surface roughly the size of a postage stamp. There is no undo. A face has to be built up in layers — base, features, outline — with cure time between each one, and the outline is what makes the difference between “that is Woody” and “that is a blob with a moustache”.

So sets like this get booked with plenty of time set aside. If you want character work, tell us when you call rather than when you arrive, and we will give you an appointment long enough to do it properly instead of rushing the last three fingers.

Our nail work is not a sideline

Gel and acrylic nails are some of the most-requested work in the salon, and the range runs the whole way from a clean, quiet French through to full custom art like this. We work with Creative, and the same chair does builds, infills, rebalances, colour, and everything painted on top.

Bring us a reference or just an idea. We will tell you honestly what will read well at nail scale and what will turn to mud — fine detail needs room, and there is a limit to how much you can fit on a short nail before it stops being legible from arm’s length. Sometimes the answer is “that idea, but on four nails instead of ten”.

Making a set last

Hand-painted art is sealed under topcoat, so it wears about as well as any gel colour — but the enemy is always the same: using your nails as tools, and letting the regrowth run too long. Once the balance shifts too far, the free edge levers against the natural nail and that is when you get lifting and breaks.

Book your infill at two to three weeks rather than waiting for something to pop off, and keep cuticle oil in your bag. If you are heading into a big event, come in beforehand — nails, hair and a SunFX spray tan can all be done in the one visit, and formal and wedding season books out months ahead.
