Shorter. Richer. Way cooler.

19 August 2026 · Hair Colour
Short rich copper bob with Wella Colour Touch at La Mode Gympie

Shorter. Richer. Way cooler. Proof that you do not need long hair to make a statement — and that a big change is usually a cut and a colour arguing in your favour.

This one went from shoulder-length, grown-out and brassy to a stacked, tapered bob in a rich rose copper. Two services, one appointment, and a completely different person walking out.

The before

Long, but not doing anything. A dark root running into faded gold ends, no shape through the back, and the weight all sitting in the last few inches where it dragged the whole thing flat. Hair that had been grown out rather than designed.

The cut

The shape is a graduated bob: short and tapered into the nape, building weight as it comes forward, and finishing longer at the jaw. Look at the back view and you can see how much work is in there — the graduation is what gives the crown its lift and stops the whole thing collapsing into a helmet.

The back — tapered tight at the nape, stacked and lifted through the crown.

A shape this precise has to be cut for the head it is on, not copied off a photo. Cutting is its own service here for men, women and children, and a strong short shape is one of the few things in hairdressing that improves your mornings rather than adding to them.

The colour

A short shape carries rich colour better than almost anything else. There is less hair, so every tone has to earn its place, and the result reads as deliberate rather than accidental. Here that is a rose copper base with softer rose-gold ribbons pulled through the top, so the surface catches light and the depth underneath keeps it from going flat.

Longer at the jaw, tapered behind — the shape does half the work.

It was built on Wella Colour Touch, which is a demi-permanent. That matters: it sits softly on the hair, gives depth and shine without the harsh regrowth line a permanent colour leaves, and it fades rather than banding. If you want richness without full commitment, this is the option to ask about.

Keeping copper copper

Copper is the fastest-fading colour family there is. The molecule is large, it sits closer to the surface of the hair, and every hot wash takes a little of it down the drain. Nothing about that is a fault in the colour — it is chemistry — but it does mean copper is a colour you commit to rather than one you set and forget.

Wash cooler and less often, use a colour-safe shampoo, and book a refresh before it goes dull rather than after. Ask us about a colour refresh or gloss between full appointments — on a shape this small it is a short booking and it puts the richness straight back.

Thinking about going short?

Bring a picture, but be ready for an honest conversation about it. Face shape, hair density, growth pattern at the nape and how much time you will realistically spend styling it all change what will actually suit you — and telling you that straight is the point of a consultation. If you would rather see a big change that went the other direction, the Blue Velvet transformation took a banded blonde to inky midnight.
