An 18th birthday makeover for Rayner, by Whit

4 October 2026 · Hair Colour
Eighteenth birthday makeover by Whit at La Mode Gympie

Some appointments land in the book because it has been a while. Others land there because someone is turning 18. Rayner came in for an 18th birthday makeover with Whit, and that one line is the whole brief — a milestone, a chair, and a stylist who knows what to do with both.

A makeover is the kind of appointment where the finished look is the point. On the day that might mean colour, a cut, styling, or all three, depending on what the consultation turns up. The aim is always the same: it should look like Rayner, done properly, rather than a look borrowed off a screen.

An 18th is not an appointment to guess at

Milestone birthdays bring people in with ideas, usually with a phone full of screenshots. That is a fine place to start, but it is not the whole conversation. Before anything gets mixed we sit down and go through the hair’s history — what has been on it, how long ago, how it is styled at home, and how much time the person in the chair actually wants to spend on it on an ordinary Tuesday. People turning 18 are usually stepping into something new, and a routine that suited one year does not always suit the next.

If you are bringing pictures, bring three rather than ten, and choose ones where the hair is close to yours in texture and length. A photo taken on a shoot is a starting point, not a promise. We will tell you straight which parts are achievable on your hair and which parts are not, and that honesty is why the finished result holds up. Our consultations are unhurried, and the same stylist stays with you from the first question to the final mirror turn.

This is also where we talk about upkeep before anyone falls in love with an idea. A look that needs a lot of maintenance is worth knowing about up front, and so is how long the appointment will realistically run.

How the look gets built

La Mode works on Wella Professionals and Goldwell, and a birthday makeover usually draws on whichever of those suits the hair in front of us. Blondes might be built with foils or balayage so the grow-out stays soft. Darker hair often takes a gloss to add shine and shift the tone without changing the base. A change of shape is frequently what makes the whole thing read as new.

Timing matters as much as the formula. Colour is worked in stages so the hair is not pushed harder than it needs to be, and the finish — a proper blow-dry, smooth or with movement — is what sends someone out looking finished rather than half done. If the day runs long, hair is only part of it: we also do makeup, gel and acrylic nails and nail art on site, so a birthday booking can cover the lot in one visit.

If you are planning a milestone, book a little further ahead than usual so we can give the appointment the room it needs. Everything on the hair side, from colour correction to cutting, styling and extensions, sits in one place.

Keeping it right between visits

A good makeover should still look like itself six weeks later. That comes down to a colour-safe wash routine, heat protection before any hot tool, and a trim on schedule — for most people somewhere between six and ten weeks — so the shape does not grow out ahead of the colour.

Ask what was used and write it down. We will tell you what went on the hair and what to use at home, and if something starts to shift — a tone going warm, a fringe sitting heavy — ring us rather than waiting for the next appointment. Small corrections are quick. Left alone, they are not.

If a birthday is coming up, it helps to know roughly where you sit before you walk in. Our pricing page lists the services and starting points, and we can give you a proper quote once we have seen the hair.
