Layers doing all the talking, by G

6 October 2026 · Blondes
Layered bombshell blonde with soft face-framing pieces at La Mode Gympie

Layers doing all the talking. That was the line on the post, and it is the right way to read this one — the shape is what you notice first, well before the colour registers.

Mia is in the chair with G again, and the result is what we would call a bombshell blonde: bright through the mid-lengths and ends, full, and always moving. Hair by G, in Wella, finished with ghd.

What a bombshell blonde actually is

Bombshell blonde is less a single shade than a combination of two things working together: brightness through the hair, and a shape that gives that brightness somewhere to sit. The tone stays inside the blonde family — a warm gold, a soft beige, or a mix of both through the same head — rather than being pushed all the way to icy white. That is usually the difference between a blonde that looks like it was made for you and one that looks flat.

Then come the layers. On a long blonde, one blunt line can drag the whole shape down, because all the weight sits at the ends. Cut layers through the length and the hair suddenly has somewhere to fall and plenty to catch the light. In this case the layers are doing the heavy lifting: softer and shorter around the face, longer and more connected through the back, so the length stays but the weight does not.

Finishing on ghd matters more than people give it credit for. Smooth, rounded ends with a little bend through the front is what turns a good colour into a style you can repeat at home on a Tuesday morning.

How a blonde like this gets built

Every blonde in the salon starts with a proper consultation. We look at what is already on the hair — previous colour, any box dye, the condition of the ends — and decide from there. A lift like Mia’s usually starts with lightening through the sections that need it, working in fine, deliberate slices so the grow-out stays soft rather than banded. Then a toner goes over the top to settle the tone and close the cuticle back down. Wella Professionals is the colour house we work in, and it is what holds a blonde like this steady between visits. You can read more about that side of the salon on The Salon page.

The cut is drafted after the colour, not before. When the hair is freshly toned you can see exactly where the light lands, and that is where the layers want to sit. What to ask for if you want something similar: long layers that start around the collarbone and taper toward the ends, face-framing pieces short enough to wear forward or push back, and a colour that stays within two or three shades of your natural root so regrowth arrives quietly. Bring a photo. We would rather see three you like and talk through what is realistic on your hair than guess — our consultation and standards page explains how that appointment runs.

Keeping it right between visits

Blonde is a commitment, but it is a manageable one. A gentle, sulphate-free wash and a decent conditioner do more for brightness than anything else on the shelf. A silver or purple shampoo once a week is plenty for most people, and only more often than that if the tone is genuinely pulling yellow.

Heat protection before the ghd, every single time. Blonde hair has been through more than your natural colour, and heat is what makes it feel dry and brittle at the ends first. A light oil or serum through the last few centimetres, applied to damp hair before you dry it, keeps the finish looking like the day it was done.

Book a toner and trim every six to eight weeks. The trim keeps the layers crisp, and the toner keeps the blonde sitting where G put it. Left much longer, the ends start to lose their shape and the tone drifts warmer than you asked for. You can see more of this kind of work on our blonde colour page.
