A lil glow up, in Wella and ghd

2 October 2026 · Hair Colour
Soft, evenly toned hair after a Wella Professionals colour and ghd finish at La Mode Gympie

“Effortless beauty,” the post says. Just a lil glow up. That is the whole brief — a colour service built on Wella Professionals and finished with ghd, done here in the chair. Nothing loud, nothing you would have to explain to anyone. Hair that reads as though it has always been this way, only a little better than yesterday.

A glow up, in salon terms, is not one dramatic change. It is a handful of small corrections made in the right order: tone evened out, ends tidied, shine put back where a Gympie summer and a few weeks of ponytails had taken it out. You notice it on the way out the door, and again three weeks later when the hair still falls the way you want it to.

What a glow up actually means

Most people who sit down and ask for a glow up do not want to be a different colour. They want the colour they already have, working properly. Regrowth softened. Any brassiness neutralised. The mid-lengths and ends brought back to the same tone as the roots, so the whole head reads as one colour rather than three.

It is a refresh, not a rebuild. That distinction matters, because a refresh is gentle on the hair and a rebuild is not. If the hair underneath is in good condition, most of the work is in tone and finish. If it is not, that is a conversation for the consultation, not something to discover halfway through. Our consultations are honest about which one you actually need.

How it is built

Colour work like this starts before anything is mixed. We look at the hair dry, in daylight, near the front window if we can. Natural light tells the truth about tone in a way salon lighting never does. From there we decide what is being corrected and what is being left alone — a full-head application, a root shadow, a toner over the whole head, or a gloss that simply puts the shine back without shifting the depth.

The colour house here is Wella Professionals, used across the salon for exactly this kind of work. Wella gives a good, predictable result on both the regrowth and the mid-lengths, which is what you want when the goal is soft rather than dramatic. Colour is applied in fine sections so it saturates evenly, then left to develop while the tone does its job.

The finish is the part clients underestimate. A ghd pass at the end — after a proper blow-dry, with the hair completely dry — is what makes the colour look even in a photograph. Wet hair hides banding and rough ends. Straightened, smoothed hair does not. That is why the last ten minutes of the appointment matter as much as the first hour. If you want to see the range of colour and finishing work we do, the salon page is a good place to start.

Keeping it right between visits

Colour holds best when the hair is not being stripped every second day. Stretch washes where you can, use a gentle shampoo rather than a clarifying one, and keep the water temperature down. A heat protector before any hot tool is non-negotiable, particularly with a ghd at home — the tool does its best work on hair that has been protected first.

Tone fades before colour does. The depth stays; the softness drifts. A toner top-up between full appointments is the cheapest way to keep a glow up looking like it did in the first week. Most clients find that smaller, more regular visits keep the hair in better condition than one long appointment every six months. Prices for both are on our pricing page.
