Chrome ghosties for spooky season

8 October 2026 · Nails
Chrome ghost nail art painted on a gel manicure at La Mode Gympie

The cutest chrome ghosties to crack off the spooky season. That was the brief on the nail desk, and the set did exactly what it promised: a gel manicure with little ghosts painted in, finished in chrome so the surface shifts and catches the light as the hand moves.

Watch it on La Mode’s Facebook

It is a set that works on two levels. Up close there is a design to look at, painted one ghost at a time. From across the table it reads as a clean, glossy, faintly metallic nail that goes with everything. That is why chrome keeps coming back around — it gives a set some movement without turning the nail into a billboard.

What a chrome ghost set is

Chrome is not a colour, it is a powder. It goes on over a cured gel colour or over a painted design, and what changes is the way light leaves the nail. Instead of a flat, even surface you get a sheen that shifts as your hand turns. Over a pale base it looks like pearl, over something darker it looks like metal. Either way the design underneath is still visible, which is why it suits small painted motifs so well.

Ghosts are a good example. A ghost is a rounded shape with two eyes, so it holds up at nail size — no detail is lost and it still reads as spooky rather than as a smudge. A set like this is generally painted freehand with a fine detail brush over a cured base colour, then sealed so nothing underneath can lift. Choosing a soft base rather than a stark one is usually what keeps a Halloween set on the cute side of the line, which is where most people want to be for a whole month of wearing it.

One thing worth knowing: chrome is only as good as the top coat over it. Powder that is not properly sealed dulls within days and starts to look cloudy at the tips. That is the part of the job you cannot rush, and it is why a design set takes longer on the books than a plain colour.

How the set is built

Every set at our nail desk starts the same way, with the natural nail. Cuticle work, shaping, a light buff over the surface so the product has something to grip, and a look at the health of the nail itself. If there is lifting from an old set, or a nail that has been picked at, that gets sorted first. Gel over a compromised nail will not last, no matter how good the design is.

From there it is a build. A base layer, then the colour, each one cured under the lamp before the next goes on. The ghosts are painted after the colour has set, using a fine brush and a small amount of gel polish so the edges stay crisp. Each shape is cured before the next one is started, because wet-on-wet painting at this scale smears. Once the design is finished and sealed, the chrome goes over the top, then a final coat, then a cure, then a check over the whole set under the light — edges, sidewalls, tips.

That sequence is why a set with art takes a good deal longer than a plain one. There is no shortcut that gets you the same crispness, and anything that claims otherwise usually shows its age within a week.

Making it last

Gel is a strong coating, but it is not armour. Treat the nail like a tool and it will chip, however well it is built. The usual culprits are opening cans, scraping labels and using the tips of the nails to pick things up. Use the pad of your finger instead and the set holds its shape far better.

At home, cuticle oil daily is the single biggest thing you can do. It keeps the natural nail flexible underneath, which reduces lifting at the base. Wear gloves for dishes, cleaning and gardening — chrome dulls quickly when it is scrubbed against abrasive cleaners. And do not pick at a lifting edge. Picking takes layers of your own nail away with the product, and that is a much longer repair than a quick visit.

Chrome designs usually need attention every two to three weeks, either an infill if you are keeping the same set or a fresh set if you want a new design. For something seasonal like this, plenty of clients book at the start of the month and wear it right through Halloween. If you are not sure what you want, bring a photo and we will talk it through at the desk — that conversation is part of every appointment at La Mode, and it is usually the difference between a set you like and a set you love.
