One colour just was not enough, colour by Mia

13 August 2026 · Creative Colour
Multi-tone rainbow creative colour by Mia at La Mode Gympie

One colour just was not enough. Teal and deep blue through the top, gold, orange, red and silver underneath, blended so the whole head moves as one instead of sitting in blocks. Colour by Mia.

Waist-length hair carrying six tones is not a colour service, it is a build. Every one of those tones needs its own clean base underneath it, they all have to be placed so they do not bleed into each other at the basin, and the finished thing has to survive Queensland sun long enough to be worth the day.

The full length — the tones travel rather than stack.

It is a lightening job before it is a colour job

Vivid pigment is translucent. It does not cover what is underneath, it sits over it — so whatever level the hair is at when the colour goes on is the level you will see through the finished result. Yellow underneath turns blue into green. Orange underneath turns pink into coral. Every clean vivid on this head is a clean pre-lift that happened first.

That is also where the risk sits. Taking long hair to the level a true vivid needs, without wrecking it, is the technically demanding part — the colour on top is the fun bit at the end.

Mid-process — ribbons hand-painted through a pre-lightened section.

Placement is the other half. Colours are laid in ribbons rather than solid panels, so that when the hair moves you see the tones slide over each other instead of seeing six stripes. Get the sectioning wrong and it reads like a flag. Get it right and it reads like light through glass.

Most salons out here will not take this on

We will. Creative and vivid colour is a named service at La Mode, alongside balayage, full heads and colour correction — and it is one of the reasons people drive to us from well outside Gympie. It is also the reason we insist on a consultation before we book it.

Bring your reference pictures. We will look at your hair’s history, tell you what is achievable on it today, and be honest if the answer is “not in one visit”. Vivid work on hair that already carries box colour or old lightening is a staged job, and pretending otherwise is how people end up with breakage instead of rainbow. An honest answer is one of the things we do not budge on.

Living with a vivid in Queensland

Vivids fade. All of them, always — and here they fade faster, because UV breaks the pigment down and heat opens the cuticle so it washes out sooner. Blues and teals hold longest, reds and coppers go first, and yellows are somewhere in between.

Wash cold and wash less. Keep it out of direct sun where you can, and out of pools entirely if you can manage it — chlorine is brutal on teal in particular. Then book a refresh before it goes muddy rather than after: topping vivid up over a still-clean base is a short appointment, while rescuing a faded multi-tone is close to starting again. Ask about an in-salon treatment at the same time to keep the pre-lifted sections in condition.
