Fresh set for Mia. That is the whole caption, and it does the job. A full set of nails, built from scratch, shaped, coloured and finished before she walked back out onto Barter Street.
Sets like this are the everyday work of the nail desk at La Mode, and they look simple from the outside. You sit down, you choose a colour, you leave with nails. What happens in between is what decides whether the set still looks good three weeks later.
We do gel and acrylic nails and nail art here, and every set starts with a short conversation about what you want to wear and how hard you are on your hands. The full list of what we offer is on The Salon page.
What a fresh set means
A fresh set is exactly that, a new set built from the beginning. Whatever was on the nails beforehand comes off, the natural nail is cleaned up, and the new set goes on over a proper foundation. Nothing is being filled in or painted over an old set.
From there it is usually one of two roads. Acrylic is the traditional option, a powder and liquid mix sculpted onto the nail that sets hard and holds a shape well. It suits people who are tough on their hands or who want length that stays where it is put. Gel is lighter and more flexible, with a glossier finish straight off the lamp. Some clients want extensions to add length, some want their own nails strengthened and shaped, and plenty want nail art, whether that is a clean line, a chrome finish or something with gems set into it.
Length and shape matter just as much as colour. Almond, oval, square, coffin and round all sit differently on a hand, and a shape that works on one set of nails will fight another. That is worth a conversation before anything gets filed.
Why a set takes the time it does
The part of the appointment clients notice least is the part that decides everything. Preparation is where a set is won or lost. Cuticles are pushed back and tidied, the nail plate is lightly buffed, and any oil or dust that would stop product bonding is removed. A set that lifts at the free edge after a week has almost always skipped something here.
Shaping comes next, and it is done by eye as much as by file. The sidewalls are straightened, the free edge is levelled, and the shape is checked from the side as well as from above, because that is the angle you see your own hands from all day.
Then the set is built in thin layers rather than one thick one. Thin layers cure properly, sit flatter and feel lighter on the nail. Rushing that stage traps uncured product underneath, which is how a set ends up feeling heavy or going cloudy.
The finish is its own step. The surface is refined so colour sits smoothly, dust is brushed away, colour goes on, and the top coat seals it. A drop of oil at the end keeps the cuticles from looking dry over the following days. None of it is complicated, but none of it can be hurried, and that is why a full set takes longer than people expect.
Making a set last
Once you leave the chair, most of the work is yours.
- Oil the cuticles daily. It keeps the skin around the nail supple and stops product lifting at the edges.
- Wear gloves for dishes, cleaning and gardening. Water and detergent break a set down faster than anything else.
- Do not use your nails as tools. Cans, labels, staples and jar lids are the usual culprits.
- Book the next appointment before you leave. A rebalance every two to three weeks is normal, and it is far quicker than rebuilding from scratch.
If something lifts or cracks between visits, ring us rather than picking at it. Picking takes natural nail with it, and that turns a small repair into a proper break. Current prices for sets, fills and nail art are on our pricing page, and if you would like to know how we run appointments from start to finish, there is more on our about page.
