Dimensional brunette, done right

29 September 2026 · Hair Colour
Glossy dimensional brunette with soft curls at La Mode Gympie

“Dimensional brunette done right.” That is how the salon put it, and it is a fair description of what is in these photos: a brunette with real depth through it. Glossy, luxe, blended and effortless. Nothing flat, nothing blocky — just rich brown with light and shadow moving through it as the hair falls.

It is one of the most requested colours in the salon and one of the most misunderstood. A dimensional brunette is not a lighter brown all over. It is a brunette with several tones woven into it, placed so the depth sits underneath and the lighter pieces lift the surface. The result reads as shine and movement rather than as colour.

What the look is

Think of it as depth with a soft veil over the top. The base stays close to your natural regrowth, so you are not fighting a hard line in six weeks. Through the mid-lengths and ends, fine ribbons of lighter brown are placed to catch the light. Around the face, a few finer pieces soften the hairline rather than framing it in a solid band.

The finish is what sells it. A gloss is worked through at the basin at the end of the service, which closes the cuticle and gives the mirror-like reflection you can see here. It also knocks any brassy warmth out of the mid-lengths and leaves the brown looking cool rather than dull.

Styled with soft ghd curls, the colour does what it is meant to do. The curls break up the surface, so you see a lighter ribbon in one spot and the deeper base in another. Straight and sleek, that same colour reads as a rich, glossy solid.

Placement is the work.

How it is built

It starts with a consultation, not a colour chart. We look at your natural depth, how much grey is coming through, how far your hair has been lightened in the past and how you actually wear it — up, down, blow-dried or air-dried. All of that decides how much lift the lighter pieces can take without turning orange or roughing up the ends.

From there, placement is the work. Fine weaves of a lighter tone are taken through the mid-lengths and ends, usually with a couple of softer pieces around the face. They are kept off the root area, which is what keeps the grow-out soft. Where a client wants more contrast, more pieces go in; where they want it subtle, fewer. Placement matters far more than the number of foils.

Wella Professionals is the colour house we use for this kind of work. The range gives us clean, predictable browns and real control over warmth, which is where brunettes most often go wrong.

Then it is finished. The hair is blow-dried smooth, glossed, and set with ghd curls so you can see how the tones sit in movement, not just in a straight line.

Keeping it right between visits

A brunette like this holds its shape well because the root area is left soft. Most clients come back somewhere between eight and twelve weeks for a top-up, and a gloss in between is a quick way to bring the shine back without a full colour.

At home: wash less often than you think you need to, use a sulphate-free shampoo, and keep heat protection on before straighteners or a curling iron. Brunette tones do not fade to blonde — they fade to a flatter, warmer brown, and heat and sun are usually the culprits. A colour-safe conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends each wash is enough for most people.

If you are not sure what your hair can take, ask at the consultation. We will tell you honestly what will hold and what will not, and we will show you the upkeep before you commit. There is more about how we work on our About page.

Every colour service at La Mode is done by the same stylist from consultation to finish. Colouring and cutting sit alongside the rest of the salon, which covers foils, balayage, full-head colour, colour correction and gloss services. If you are weighing up options, the hair colour pages show more of the work, and pricing is set out clearly before you book.
